The story of Atlantis, a legendary island civilization that disappeared without a trace, has captivated people’s imagination for centuries. Many have dismissed it as a mere myth or a fable, while historical accounts assert that the Atlantean Empire was real. In this article, we will explore the evidence and delve into the fascinating world of Atlantis, examining its geographical territory, the war that it provoked, and its ultimate destruction, based on Plato’s account. In Part I, we’ll examine the introduction to Atlantis that Critias gives to Socrates in Timaeus.
The Historical Accounts of Atlantis
The tale of Critias
The tale of Atlantis was first mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias.
The dialogue of Timaeus is a philosophical conversation between Socrates, Critias, Timaeus and Hermocrates, taking place around 300 BC.
In this conversation, Critias shares a tale he inherited from his great-grandfather, Dropides, who was a disciple of Solon.
Solon, the wisest of the seven sages
Solon was a great poet and renowned philosopher who traveled the world.
He began the conversation sharing the oldest accounts he could recall, about Phoroneus, Niobe and the Deluge, and how Deucalion and Pyrrha survived.
The lessons of Thereupon
One of the Egyptian Priests, Thereupon, interrupted Solon:
“O Solon, Solon, you Hellenes are never anything but children.”
“At such times those who live upon the mountains and in dry and lofty places are less liable to destruction than those who dwell by rivers or on the seashore.”
“Just when you and other nations are beginning to be provided with letters and the other requisites of civilized life, after the usual interval, the stream from heaven, like a pestilence, comes pouring down, and leaves only those of you who are destitute of letters and education; and so you have to begin all over again like children, and know nothing of what happened in ancient times, either among us or among yourselves.”
Ancient Egypt: The Hall of Records
Thereupon explains that the land of Egypt was never affected by deluges, as there the water never comes from above but rather from below, by the flooding of the Nile.
As Ancient Egyptians were aware of this privileged situation, they understood that one of their sacred missions was to record the World’s History and preserve it for generations to come.
“Whatever happened either in your country or in ours, or in any other region of which we are informed — if there were any actions noble or great or in any other way remarkable, they have all been written down by us of old, and are preserved in our temples.”
“In the first place you remember a single deluge only, but there were many previous ones; in the next place, you do not know that there formerly dwelt in your land the fairest and noblest race of men which ever lived, and that you and your whole city are descended from a small seed or remnant of them which survived.”
Atlantis, stopped by the Ancient Athenians
This is when Thereupon introduced Atlantis for the first time. Thanks to Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greeks recovered their pasts origins and Atlantis resurected from oblivion in Humankind’s consciousness.
“And this was unknown to you, because, for many generations, the survivors of that destruction died, leaving no written word. For there was a time, Solon, before the great deluge of all, when the city which now is Athens was first in war and in every way the best governed of all cities, is said to have performed the noblest deeds and to have had the fairest constitution of any of which tradition tells, under the face of heaven.”
The Atlantean Territory
![Atlantean Territory](https://heru.fm/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Atlantis-on-map.jpeg)
Atlantis was actually the name of the island-continent, located right in front of the Columns of Heracles (Strait of Gibraltar), in the middle of what is now the Atlantic Ocean, according to Thereupon.
“This power came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean, for in those days the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Heracles.”
Back in 9,600 BC, the island-continent was larger than Libya (African Continent) and Asia put together.
Off the west coast of Atlantis were numerous other smaller islands, including what are known today as the Caribbean Islands.
From these islands, one could reach what we call today America.
“The island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands, and from these you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent which surrounded the true ocean.”
Thereupon describes the Atlantic Ocean as a true ocean, as opposed to the Mediterranean Sea which he describes as a harbor in comparison. America was depicted as a boundless continent, which leaves no doubt about its identity.
Recently, pyramidal structures aligned with the cardinal points were found underwater to the west of the Azores Islands, off of the northern East Coast of America.
The Atlantean Empire

A culturally and technologically advanced civilization
On the island of Atlantis dwelt a great and wonderful empire which had dominion over the whole island and most of the smaller surrounding islands, part of America, and the entirety of the Mediterranean coastal area, both on the African side as far as Egypt, and on the European side as far as Turkey.
“Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and, furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia (Turkiye).”
The Atlantean Empire was global, multicultural and multi-continental. The location of the Atlantean neuralgic center and capital city is not specifically mentioned in Timaeus, but recent theories suggest that it could have been located at the Richat Structure, near the Atlas Mountains in Morocco (close to the Pillars of Heracles).
It is interesting to note that some of the most enigmatic ancient monuments such as the Central and South American pyramids and temples, as well as the Ancient Egyptian ones, were all built on Atlantean territory.
This could be an answer to the mystery of their architectural and cultural similarities: they were all built by the same civilization.
The War between Atlantis and the Hellenes
The Hellenes were the Ancient Greeks, and were led by Ancient Athens.
Ancient Athens was the last piece of the Hellenes Empire to resist the Atlantean invasion.
They resisted so well that they managed to defeat the Atlanteans and freed all the occupied nations in Europe and Libya (ancient name for Africa), and prevented the rest of the world to become captive of the Atlantean Empire.
In Thereupon’s own words:
“Ancient Athens was pre-eminent in courage and military skill, and was the leader of the Hellenes. And when the rest fell off from her, being compelled to stand alone, after having undergone the very extremity of danger, she defeated and triumphed over the invaders, and preserved from slavery those who were not yet subjugated, and generously liberated all the rest of us who dwell within the pillars.”
At the end of the war which left the world in utmost desolation, a Great Deluge occurred and wiped out most of the surface of the Earth, practically annihilating life on Earth.
The earthquakes and floods were so violent that the island-continent of Atlantis sank in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean overnight, leaving behind it a vast and tumultuous shoal of mud which remained impassable for centuries.
“But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island.”
Conclusion:
The story of Atlantis is more than just a myth or a legend. The brightest minds of all times always considered Atlantis to be real and rich in teaching for modern generations.
The Legacy of Atlantis and the Hellenes is immense and invaluable to our own civilization.
The German scientists who joined the USA after WWII, as well as many others, were all aware and knowledgeable about Atlantis and the Ancient Civilizations from which we’ve inherited most of our sciences and technologies.
In the upcoming Part II, we’ll examine the account of Critias, who gives a colourful and detailed description of the Lost Empire in his conversation with Socrates, in the eponymous dialogue Critias written by Plato.
